LIGHTEN UP CALLOWAY’S KIDS WELLNESS DAY CAMP

Lighten Up Calloway hosted a two week Kid’s Wellness Day Camp this summer, which included 100 local children ages 5 – 14 years.  For the first week, children ages 5 (post kindergarten) – 8 years attended the camp; the second week was designated for older children aging from 9 – 14 years.

“This event has been something that was made for us to support. We have an allotted amount of donations for activities like this that involve bettering the health for local children. We all look forward to hosting this event again next year and seeing it grow. Thank you to everyone involved,” said Keith Travis Vice President of Development.

Each day the children learned about wellness through different activities, with a strong focus on nutrition, physical activity and hygiene. They enjoyed activities like arts and crafts, active games and a free afternoon at the pool to cool off. A free lunch was provided through coordination with the Summer in the Park Program. The Summer in the Park Program is an initiative provided by collaboration with both Murray and Calloway Family Resource Centers. The program provides free meals throughout the summer to children to combat hunger.

This event was made possible by the help of Murray Calloway Endowment for Healthcare Shawn Smee, Murray State University, Murray-Calloway County Hospital, Murray Independent and Calloway County Family Resources Centers, Kenlake Foods, Shanna Burgess, Murray State University Pre-Medical Students, Ed Zimmerer, Patrick Morris at Murray Police Department, Myrna Vazquez of the UK Extension Office, Dawn Therrell of Dawn’s Fitness, Calloway County Health Department, Zax’s, Murray Calloway County Parks and Murray City Pool, Center for Health and Wellness, Summer in the Parks Activities Committee, KYOSA, Rotary Clun of Murray, and Suzanne Seeley.
