Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive, degenerative disease which attacks the brain. It is the most common form of dementia and its causes are unknown. More than 2 million Americans are diagnosed with the disease.

The Alzheimer’s Association recently announced its plans to host a monthly support group in Benton for family members and caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s or another dementia related disease. The support group will meet on the first Wednesday of each month, at the Marshall County Public Library in Benton.

The setting is a small discussion group with an emphasis on sharing feelings, thoughts, experiences and education. The meetings typically last one hour.

Teresa Thompson, Community Educator for the Murray-Calloway County Hospital Geriatric Behavioral Health Unit and volunteer for the Alzheimer’s Association will begin facilitating the support group starting in March 2019. The support group’s first meeting is scheduled to meet on Wednesday, March 6th at 10:00 a.m., at the Marshall County Public Library, located on Poplar Street in Benton Kentucky.

According to Teresa, the support group is a free resource and anyone in the area who provides care for someone with dementia is invited to attend. For additional information, please call (270) 762-1224.
